AGENDA HELLO

From Concept to Shipping

The Opportunity

A child's first days at school are scary. They are scarier for the parents, who spend the whole day wondering whether everything is all right.

That worry never really goes away. At some point every parent has to cut the umbilical cord and let the child face what comes next.

My team and I set out to shorten the distance between school, teachers, parents and students, so parents could follow the academic routine instead of guessing.

Challenge

The hard part was never the idea. It was making the product simple enough that busy people would open it every single day.

We studied apps with a similar concept to check the market was real. It was. Our feature set matched what the competition offered, and the fit was there.

From the school side
  • A secure, dynamic tool that makes communication with parents, students and teachers effortless, and builds trust along the way.
From Parents side
  • Staying connected to their children's academic life, and being notified whenever something important happens at school.
From students side
  • Keeping up with the calendar, dates and events, with extra material coming through the study group.

Design Process

Before designing a single screen, I had to know the business model would hold. We were about to put our own money into this, so I validated it with three potential clients first.

With the model in place, we ran brainstorming sessions to decide what went into the MVP and what stayed out. When money is limited you cannot afford to be wrong. There is no recipe for success, but studying the data lets you predict a few factors and improve your odds.

Naming & Branding

Naming a company is one of the hardest tasks in the whole process. The name has to be simple, easy to say, easy to spell, and the domain has to be free.

After hours of research and a long list of boring options, I landed on Hello. We were solving a communication problem, and Hello is how a conversation starts. The domain agendahello.com was available. We bought it that same day.

With the name settled, I moved to the logotype. I sketch on paper first, always. Paper and ink let you test a dozen variations of the same idea fast and without commitment, so the process stays playful.

I wanted something clean, light and colourful. Typography plus a few happy colours turned out to be enough. Keeping things simple is harder than it looks.

Sketching…

This is my favourite part of the process. Prototyping is where ideas take shape and where you test every possible solution with colleagues and clients before committing to any of them.

We wanted a dynamic platform, so I designed around cards. Each component lives in its own card and can be added or removed straight from the admin.

Pixel Perfect

With the design validated and adjusted, I moved to the high fidelity prototype: colours, shapes, typography and icons in their final form.

Website

We had a deadline, because other projects were paying the bills. Time was against us, so we designed and coded the website at the same time.

The plan was a provisional site we would rebuild later. Everyone liked the result, so we never did. We added information and small improvements along the way, but the base is still the one we shipped that week.

Market Research

I ran the research to understand who we were competing with, who we were serving and how to reach them.

Brazil had 50 million students in basic education, and only 20 percent of them were in São Paulo. The market was big enough to sustain a B2B product and spread out enough that no single player owned it. That was our opening.

Final Thoughts

Agenda Hello is a B2B platform. The school registers teachers, staff, students and parents, and everyone gets access through the iOS and Android apps.

Schools send messages, publish the calendar and the homework, share pictures and request materials. Parents follow their children's routine, get notified of what matters and reach the school without friction. Students see what is coming and get extra content.

We sold it with no minimum contract, no installation fee and a free first month. Schools could leave whenever they wanted. That confidence came from having validated the model before we built anything.

The platform ended up as seven applications:

Web Admin for the school managers
iOS and Android for Teachers
iOS and Android for Parents
iOS and Android for Students

Concept to App Store and Google Play took a year and a half, plus six more months fixing performance, bugs and the details that only show up once real people are using the thing.

Hello is on the market and there is still a long road ahead.
